About Us

Founded in 1974 the aims of the Society are to collect, record, preserve and exhibit material relevant to the history of Prahran for the benefit of the local community, researchers and other interested persons.

Since 1982, the Prahran Historical & Arts Society Inc. has published a number of volumes firstly in its Historical Series, and secondly the Prahran Heritage Series and in our latest publications the Discovering Prahran Series. All these books are currently in print and available. We have also undertaken a number of Oral Histories.

We are an affiliated member of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria, and members of the Stonnington History Committee, and the South Metro History Group, and the Prahran Mechanics Institute (Inc)

We have stored thousands of documents, artifacts and memorabilia which have been professionally catalogued onto a database for the use of researchers, students and members. If you wish to visit the archives an appointment must be made first and can be arranged by contacting the Local History Officer on 8290 1360.

If you have any family associations with the district over a lengthy period which you consider should be included in the history of the Prahran area, or any old photographs, newspapers and memorabilia which you would donate or loan to the Society, please contact us.
